About

W E L C O M E

Hello! Thank you for taking the time to stop my corner of the internet. Desiré Bennett.

I’m a friend, a mother, a daughter, a sister, a United State of Women Ambassador, a Leadership Council member for the Women’s Fund of the Greater Cincinnati Foundation, a commissioner on the Hamilton County Commission on Women & Girls, a task force member on the City of Cincinnati’s Gender Equity Task Force, a board member on the MLK Coalition, and a Community Connector. Not necessarily in that order.

On Saturday March 25, 2017 I was invited to speak at an event and share my story of going from a teenage single-mother and high school drop out to being a post-graduate Social Justice Advocateand the 20-year climb to economic self-sufficiency it took to get there.

Later that day, I had the opportunity to have a meaningful conversation with Glennon Doyle. Yes, that Glennon Doyle (she was accompanying then fiancé (now wife) Abby Wambach–yes, that Abby Wambach–because Abby was the keynote speaker for this event).

Glennon encouraged me to get to writing, saying “Respect your Dream…and show up for yourself.” She suggested that I devote time to writing in one hour increments. Just write for at least an hour a day and see where it takes me. Since my life is a bit crazy–I’m still a single mother who has a demanding fulltime job and an even more demanding angst-y teenage daughter–I know there’ll be days when I fail. But I am going to do my best to show up for myself and share my story one hour at a time.

To Glennon, I say: Thank You. I’m going to “Write on, Warrior Sister.”

Loving it. I found Medium to be the best forum for me because no set up, and lots of publications that hold space for me. one of my favorite publications on it is this glorious mess, you might want to consider submitting there. I write from love, with love, and am sure you will too! I am raw as can be (and anonymous) It’s been a fantastic creative outlet for me that I never knew was in me. I write when I moved to. It’s an oxygen tank. Great job starting and enjoy the process!!!! Be Fierce! 💃
